Summertown Woman Falls Victim To Employment Scam

A Summertown woman reported to law enforcement officials last week that she had fallen victim to an employment scam.

On Wednesday the victim, age 50, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had been scammed out of some $1,821.50.

The victim said that she had been seeking employment online when she was offered a job with Nova Medical Supplies. “Company officials” told her they would send her money to purchase office supplies with which to perform her job.

She said she received a check in the amount of $4,679.99 on May 19 and deposited it into her checking account. Likewise, she said she received a check for $1,969.99 on May 27. She deposited the second check, as well.

The victim said that she received word from the company to wire money to two separate Walmart locations. She said that she sent the money transfers, in the amounts of $189.50 and $1,632.

Shortly afterward she said she received word from her bank indicating that the two checks she had initially deposited were “no good.”

Investigation in the matter is currently on-going.
